In the interest of keeping secrets secret, here are seven spoiler-free reasons to see The Cabin in the Woods this weekend.
1. It’s Not Just a Unique Horror Film; It’s a Unique Film

Every few years, a new trend comes along for horror movies. As far back as the 1940s, it was the Universal monster movies. In the 50s, it was alien invasions and creatures mutated from atomic testing. In the 80s, it was the teen slasher film. A few years back, it was torture porn. Now, it’s found footage. The great thing about The Cabin in the Woods is that the film is none of these things. Yet, it is also a nod to many elements in the horror genre. There’s no dirty-basement torture sequence, and the film isn’t shot by some drunken partygoer. Cabin takes a stab at the genre and cuts close to the bone, but it does so in a very unique and compelling way. And beyond the horror genre itself, it’s a unique take on film in general. There’s nothing quite like it out there in any genre.
2. It’s More Than You Think It Is

The biggest problem with marketing The Cabin in the Woods is to let people know that it’s not just another cabin in the woods movie. Horror fans will notice the Evil Dead look of the cabin, and they’ll immediately see it as an homage, but there’s so much more there. Even though the trailer – and even the poster to a certain degree – dips its toes into spoiler territory, the entirety of the film is relatively fresh taking those marketing elements in mind. Little more can be said about anything that happens in the film, but rest assured there’s more going on than just some horny college kids getting attacked in a cabin in the woods.
3. It’s a Theatrical Experience

Part of the fun of The Cabin in the Woods is that it’s a crowd-participation film. Sure, you don’t want people talking and texting in the film. However, like a good comedy, it has some great laugh-out-loud moments that are more impactful in a theater of people laughing out loud. Similarly, like the horror classic Dead Alive or Evil Dead 2, there’s a visceral joy in watching things unfold with an entire theater screaming, shrieking and gasping around you. Nothing quite matches the energy of watching a film like this with 300 of your closest friends.
4. The Cast Is Awesome

Fans of Joss Whedon will recognize some of the actors from his previous works, including Amy Acker and Fran Kranz. While the main cast has newer actors in it, they all work in their respective roles. If you’re jonesing to see Chris Hemsworth before Avengers comes out, you’ve got that here. If you’re looking for respectable older actors like Richard Jenkins and Bradley Whitford, they’re here as well. Plus, there are a few surprises in the ranks as well. Not everyone in this film is going to win an Oscar in their career, but this comes off as one of the best cast films in recent years.
5. There Are Plenty of R-Rated Elements

With the MPAA under question for various films over the years, and with studios aiming to crank out PG-13 movies in the interest of maximizing profits, it’s great to see a film that doesn’t shy away from the elements that make horror movies great. Still, with the nudity, blood, gore and mayhem that is seen in The Cabin in the Woods, it’s not done for simple shock effect. Even when aiming for an emotional or carnal reaction, the R-rated elements are relevant to the overall film. (According to the MPAA, The Cabin in the Woods is rated R for strong bloody horror violence and gore, language, drug use and some sexuality/nudity.)
6. If This Makes Money, More Films Like This Will Be Made

Hollywood is an odd duck. On one hand, it champions itself as a bastion of creativity and originality. On the other hand, it won’t put any money into something unless it’s been done before and profited handsomely. Wouldn’t it be great if audiences would send the message to Hollywood that they want unique and original ideas on screens rather than cookie-cutter knock-offs, remakes, reboots and adaptations? The best way to ensure this is to see The Cabin in the Woods in the theaters on opening weekend. Do we want every film made to be just like The Cabin in the Woods? Of course not. But it’d be nice if we got at least a few more like it before Hollywood abandons the idea.
7. You Don’t Want it Spoiled

By now, you’ve heard that there are spoilers all over the internet about this film, from The Hollywood Reporter’s inconsiderate SXSW review to Rex Reed’s wildly inaccurate fever dream that manages to give everything away until the bitter end. Genre fans are going to latch onto this film quickly, just as members of advanced audiences have. However, the people who don’t particularly like the film are prepped to rant about plot elements and such. More over, if Cabin is a big hit, it’ll become the punch line of comments and jokes. Just as today it’s nearly impossible to not know the ending of Psycho or The Sixth Sense, if Cabin makes its way fully into the mainstream consciousness, the spoiler-free experience will soon be gone.

When “Firefly” and “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” creator Joss Whedon introduced the film “The Cabin in the Woods” last month at the South by Southwest Film Festival in Austin, Texas, he told the audience, “I hope you enjoy it, and then sorta keep it to yourself.”

Whedon, the film’s writer and producer, really meant it. He even recorded a video plea asking fans who saw the horror film not to give away any of the major plot points online.

It’s no secret that the film, long awaited by Whedon fans, doesn’t really take place in a cabin in the woods. The trailer points out that a group of college kids only think they’re spending a weekend in what is actually a controlled environment. Beyond that, however, fans who have seen the movie already are expected to stay mum on what happens, to avoid ruining it for those who have yet to see the movie, which hits theaters Friday.

The spoiler culture, of course, has been around at least since the dawn of the Internet, and directors have long been asking audiences not to give away surprises, most famously since Alfred Hitchcock and “Psycho.” But there now seems to be a renewed focus – especially with the advent of social media – on making sure that fans don’t say too much.

“The Walking Dead” executive producer Glen Mazzara recently told reporters about a “security task force,” led by producer Gale Ann Hurd, creator Robert Kirkman and “computer savvy” Scott Kimple. Their job is to make sure leaks about the show’s many secrets don’t appear online.

“AMC takes this stuff very seriously,” Mazzara said. “And we try to see where leaks are coming from and if they’re accurate or they’re not and then trying to get stuff taken down and it’s really like trying to sweep back the ocean.”

Fran Kranz, who plays Marty in “The Cabin in the Woods,” said he can understand some fans’ desire to find out as much as they can about a film or TV series.

“I’m a big fan of horror films, and I want to know about all kinds of movies, and I totally get it,” he told CNN. “I find when I meet a fan of Joss’, I’m just as excited about his work as they are. I’ll be first in line to see (Whedon’s) ‘The Avengers.’ “

Kranz said the secrecy around “Cabin” started from the beginning. His audition was a scene that wasn’t even in the film, involving a fake character called the Clickety-Clack Man. He also said that his scripts were watermarked with his name to discourage leaks.

“I do wanna geek out with (fans),” he said. “It does get difficult (not to spill secrets), but I thought, this movie was so cool, I respected the secrecy.”

Kranz’s first exposure to the world of Whedon was on the short-lived Fox series “Dollhouse.” Apparently, he was seen as saying too much about the series in interviews.

“I remember getting a call from Fox saying I was talking too much about ‘Dollhouse,’ ” he said.

“Cabin” star Kranz, who admits to being a big fan of horror films, is staying mum about the movie’s plot.

This secretiveness is nothing new, though, for the “Whedonverse,” as fans call it. From “Buffy” on, his shows and films have always been chock-full of surprises, so there’s always some secrecy.

“That’s always been there with Joss,” Kranz said. “He’s got that mischievous glimmer in his eye (from holding on to secrets). He’s got that Mona Lisa smile.”

And Whedon’s upcoming “The Avengers” is one about which fans have been clamoring to learn more. In fact, there was so much speculation about Skrulls (aliens in the Marvel Comics universe) in the movie that the director had to knock down those rumors.

There’s also a lot of secrecy around other big summer blockbusters, such as Ridley Scott’s “Prometheus,” the plot of which is still largely unknown, and Christopher Nolan’s final Batman film, “The Dark Knight Rises.”

That hasn’t stopped some fans from seeking out answers to their burning questions. But what drives this thirst for spoilers?

“Some people just want to know everything as soon as they can find it out,” said Steven Weintraub of the entertainment site Collider.com. “And some of them will say it doesn’t damage the movie experience. They just have to know right now. However, I’d like to think more people are like me and want to stay spoiler-free until they see the movie.”

Weintraub has even gone as far as to avoid seeing trailers as much as possible.

Eric “Quint” Vespe writes for Ain’t It Cool News, which made a name for itself in the early days of the Internet by posting spoilers and other movie news.

“I think from a fan’s perspective the right amount of spoilers can raise the excitement level, but I’m sure from a filmmaker’s point of view they want the eyeballs taking in their film to be as fresh as possible,” he said. “I personally try to avoid spoilers, but that’s a pretty tall order when it comes to my line of work.”

With “The Cabin in the Woods,” Weintraub said he thinks the fan community has generally respected Whedon’s wishes.

“Most online reviewers have done a tremendous job keeping the twists and turns under wraps,” he said. “I even hosted a screening of the film in Boston and most went to Twitter and Facebook and did what I asked: They raved about the movie without spoiling it. However, some of the big Hollywood trades that ran early reviews spoiled the entire film. Which makes literally no sense.”

There’s something else happening, too, Vespe said: “I’m seeing a disturbing trend of critics using their reviews to spoil movies they don’t like as a way of trying to ruin the experience for someone who may like the movie.”

However, Vespe said he thinks that most of the top entertainment bloggers have moved away from posting spoilers in recent years: “Some of it comes from not wanting to ruin the experience for their readers (typically the cooler blogs and movie sites come at it this way) and some of it comes from not wanting to burn bridges with studios.”

Ben Kendrick, an editor at Screenrant.com, however, said he still sees spoilers as prevalent, thanks to social networks.

“It’s becoming far more prevalent to inadvertently run into spoilers,” he said. “While some people are definitely sensitive about how they discuss spoiler info, censoring themselves on Twitter or putting spoiler warnings in online news and editorial posts, there are still plenty of people who do not censor themselves. Just look at all the tweets that are posted after an episode of ‘The Walking Dead’ or ‘Dexter,’ and you’ll see message after message that outright spoil the more shocking moments and twists in an episode.”

So, despite efforts by Whedon, Mazzara and others, the death of the spoiler is unlikely.

“Listen, it comes down to a personality developed in early childhood,” Vespe said. “Do you see a present under the Christmas tree and want to figure it out weeks before opening it, or do you like to let the mystery build up? I wasn’t a present-shaker. I liked to imagine that anything could be behind the wrapping paper. I absolutely understand wanting to solve the mystery, and I see a value in the hunt for that information building up the anticipation of actually getting to open the box.

“I just lean more on the side of letting the mystery grow in my mind.”

If you’ve read anything at all about “The Cabin in the Woods,” you know you shouldn’t be reading anything about “The Cabin in the Woods” before you see it.

That makes it an unusually difficult film to review. Drew McWeeny already shared his terrific take when the film opened the SXSW Film Festival. Now that it’s hitting theaters — finally! It was shot in 2009 and spent years on the shelf as a prisoner of MGM’s financial struggles — we’re offering a second look.

First, another warning: I’m not going to spoil anything major here, but if you’re cautious about going in to the movie knowing as little as possible, stop reading and go. Part of what makes “Cabin” such a unique experience — one well worth taking the time to see in a theater — is how well it uses the element of surprise to its advantage. “If you think you know this story, think again,” is the tagline. They’re not kidding.

The set-up is intentionally cliché. Five college friends — sweet redhead Dana (Kristen Connolly), smart jock Curt (Chris Hemsworth), sensitive dreamboat Holden (Jesse Williams), blonde bombshell Jules (Anna Hutchison) and sarcastic stoner Marty (Fran Kranz) — head out on a weekend trip to a spooky cabin in the woods. They’re in the middle of nowhere, the closest human being is the creepy and vaguely menacing owner of a rundown gas station, and the cabin decor (a one-way mirror between two bedrooms, portraits of gore and mutilation) suggests interior design by Hannibal Lecter. So obviously one of the first things they do is change into swimsuits and jump in the nearby lake.

You know you’re watching a horror movie, and you know some of these characters are going to die. They should know it too (but only Marty is remotely suspicious), and that’s the point. “Cabin” wants to take the meta-horror of “Scream” to another level and play around with the conventions passed down by several decades worth of slasher horror.

Horror film convetions are turned on their ear when a group of youngsters go …

The masterminds behind this movie — director Drew Goddard and his co-screenwriter Joss Whedon — worked together on “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Angel,” and the same mix of comedy, drama, horror and action that defined those shows so brilliantly is all over “Cabin.” With just a few minor alterations you could easily imagine “Buffy’s” Scooby Gang in this story. I can’t think of a higher compliment for a horror comedy intent on giving its audience a ridiculously fun time.

And “Cabin” is really, really fun.

But here’s my minor quibble: All the fun gets in the way of the scares. The deliberately flat characters never really popped for me, and I didn’t particularly care if they lived or died. I also didn’t find the killers at the cabin (I won’t reveal who or what they are) very compelling or creatively executed. (Although, on balance, that’s an extremely minor issue.)

The continually winking jokiness of the ever-shifting plot keeps “Cabin” humming right along without really building the intensity or suspense that marks the best horror filmmaking. The kind of intensity that will hopefully be seen on screen this year if film festival favorites “The Loved Ones” and “You’re Next” are actually released as scheduled.

“Scream” made fun of slasher movies, but it was also a brutal and vivid viewing experience. The opening sequence with Drew Barrymore’s Casey still wears me out when I watch it today, and I want Neve Campbell’s Sidney to fight her way to survival every time. “Cabin’s” Dana is a fine enough heroine — and Connolly is an unassuming beauty in the mold of Whedon women like Felicia Day, Alyson Hannigan or a less curvy Christina Hendricks (who guest starred in an episode of “Firefly”) — but in a movie that admirably aspires to become one of the all time greats, I wish she was at least a little more interesting.

Richard Jenkins and Bradley Whitford are also in the cast, in very important roles. In fact, they’re the first people we see. I don’t want to say anything about their characters, but I will mention that there’s a dumb, Eli Roth kind of direction they could’ve gone with these guys, and thankfully no one involved wanted to do that.

On the other hand, there’s a “surprise” celebrity cameo that’s less surprising than it probably should be because of how the character is first revealed. And the potentially shocking death of another character is undermined by something we’ve already seen, and know is going to happen.

I don’t think any of this will really matter to horror fans primed to embrace such a cool, creative and oddly delightful concoction. Goddard has done a pretty fantastic job for a first-time filmmaker, and there is a lot of memorable imagery here. Director of photography Peter Deming shot all the “Scream” sequels, “Mulholland Dr.” and “Drag Me to Hell,” and clearly became an invaluable part of the team.

And the film’s emphasis on comedy over relentless tension may actually help broaden the audience beyond the usual genre crowd. Like “Evil Dead 2,” “Cabin” will be a great movie for teens to watch at sleepovers. A fine choice for date night that won’t leave anyone quaking in fear after the credits roll.

It’s a wild ride. Don’t be afraid to see where it takes you.

Though it conjures up creepy images, The Cabin in the Woods (* * * out of four, rated R, opens Friday nationwide) is not the same old haunted-house fright-fest. Nor is it a classic horror movie, or even a teen slasher pic.

Ultimately, though, this is a sendup of the genre, and as such, it’s not scary as much as it is funny. Thanks to the savvy script devised by Joss Whedon and director Drew Goddard, humor abounds. There’s no shortage of mayhem and gore at the hand of weapon-wielding zombies, sinister porcelain dolls, eerie winged beasts and other nightmarish figures. Even a galloping white unicorn contributes to the bedlam.

Some dialogue will remind audiences of the sassy sarcasm tossed off in the face of monstrous creatures in Whedon’s cult TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, episodes of which Goddard also co-wrote.

The plot is intentionally familiar: Five college pals head off in an RV to a remote country cabin for some lakeside frolicking. There’s brawny jock Curt (Chris Hemsworth); his sexy girlfriend, Jules (Anna Hutchison); shy Dana (Kristen Connolly); nerdy but hot Holden (Jesse Williams); and lovable pothead Marty (Fran Kranz).

They venture into a creepy basement where Dana finds a girl’s diary detailing all manner of horrific torment at the hands of her sadistic father. Soon, a “zombie redneck torture family” comes crawling out of the grave and sets upon the teens.

Interwoven throughout are less spooky and un-undead adults in shirt sleeves and ties. Richard Jenkins and Bradley Whitford are particularly funny in their middle-management roles. Things build toward a shattering conclusion.

While simultaneously rearranging and indulging in horror’s most recognizable tropes, Whedon and Goddard comment on the formulaic nature of horror films and increasingly grotesque methods of disposing of characters. Their story also prompts audiences to examine their fascination with carnage.

Though there are plot holes in the elaborately concocted scenarios, The Cabin in the Woods gets points for the twists and turns that come along with its sly wickedness. And who can resist a killer unicorn?

Are we in the right theater? That was the first fleeting thought that went through my head during the opening few seconds of Drew Goddard’s Cabin in the Woods, as Steve and Richard (Richard Jenkins and Bradley Whitford) — two middle-aged, middle-management types — engage in banal conversation over a water cooler, in what appears to be a quasi-military scientific facility. Didn’t we show up to see attractive young people getting killed creatively in a rustic, natural setting?

But soon enough, we’re presented with the good-looking collegians we expected: They’re all meeting up at the house of Dana (Kristen Connolly) for a weekend off the grid, packing into an RV to head to a remote mountain retreat. Even before they make their debut, though, it’s clear this is the right movie: There’s no mistaking the familiar tone of producer and co-writer Joss Whedon’s trademark witty banter in that opening scene.

From there, things proceed, on one level, exactly as expected: some quick expository banter in the RV to establish the characters, a stop at a run-down gas station that seems drawn equally from Deliverance and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and eventual arrival at the cabin, shot to evoke the Evil Dead series.

In the basement of the house, during a game of truth or dare (of course), the gang find a collection of creepy trinkets, baubles, and assorted ephemera that looks like a horror-movie attic sale: sepia-toned photos of a long-dead family; a diary describing their violent past; blank-eyed porcelain dolls and puzzle boxes. Each one is a portent of bad things about to happen, which only the group’s resident stoner conspiracy theorist, Marty (Whedon regular Fran Kranz) seems to realize.

The catch is that as this crew of slightly too-stereotypical archetypes goes through the horror movie motions, their every move is being monitored by Steve and Richard back at that facility, along with an army of supporting staffers and technicians, both observing and working to influence the proceedings. Nothing in this film is quite what it seems.

A horror-movie attic sale is, in essence, exactly what Cabin in the Woods is, an attempt to exorcise the genre of its formulaic possession by stuffing the movie full of its most overused and predictable elements — and then dumping them through clever skewering.

It would be unfair to speak in any kind of detail about the precise nature of the interaction between the cabin and the observers, or about some of the crazy images that Goddard manages to put onscreen during the chaos of the film’s completely insane climax. I will say that I was watching through tears of laughter flowing so freely that I probably didn’t even catch the entire parade of the bizarre in that sequence.

But part of the pleasure of this movie — one of a great many pleasures, as it’s the most entertaining and satisfying horror movie I’ve seen in a long while — is to see how that relationship unfolds, and to be completely surprised by those images. Goddard and Whedon have created a wonderful puzzle of a film that is loving in its appreciation of good horror, even as takes the genre (and its blood-lusty audience) to task for the unimaginative banality that has been too typical of recent scary movies.

There’s a serious and smart critique here, and life-or-death stakes that only come from characters one genuinely cares about — a neat trick, given that they’re set up to be so generic. But Whedon, the creator of a vampire slayer named Buffy, has always excelled at clever one-liners set against backdrops of unspeakable and ancient evil. Goddard, in his first turn as director, matches the verbal wit with memorable visual set-pieces that are as hilarious as they are horrific.

It’s true that the symbolic connections drawn here aren’t exactly subtle, but subtlety in subtext has rarely been the prerogative of even the best horror. Neither is the movie particularly scary, but that’s not the aim here either. Whedon and Goddard create a self-contained universe that plays by its own rules to serve its own critical agenda, and does so with smarts and skill.

For all of its intellectual pleasures, though, Cabin in the Woods is a visceral roller coaster of a movie at heart. And like the best thrill rides, when it’s over, you just want to get back on and go again. (Recommended)
